Where can I find you?
Skittenelv/Æra is located 25 km from the center of Tromsø at about 69 degrees north. Check our location on the homepage.

How can I travel to Æra?
You can take a flight to Oslo, Norway's capital to Tromsø, on an approximately 2-hour flight north. There are also direct routes from various destinations in Europe. From Tromsø Airport it’s only a 35-minute drive inland to Skittenelv.

What is the kitchen equipped with?
In our Panorama Glass Lodge Cabins and Aurora glass cabin superior is equipped with cooking hobs while our Aurora Glass Cabin, Aurora cabin 1-bedroom and Aurora Family 2-bedrooms is equipped with a stove. All cabins have a coffee machine, kettle, fridge and all you will need to cook.

When is the best season to visit Æra?
The winter is our recommended season to visit ÆRA, this is because of the winter landscape and the chances to see the northern lights. We have various activities in the winter, such as northern light guiding, reindeer feeding, dog sledding and live king crab meals.

When does the first snowfall usually occur at Skittenelv/Æra?
The first snow can come to Skittenelv as early as October, but the snow does not often settle until the beginning of December. Some winters as long as January.

Is there daylight in winter?
The official time of the Polar night when the sun is below the horizon in Tromsø is between 27 November and 15 January. In this period we have something we call the «Blue hour» where the day is filled with beautiful light.

How cold does it get in the winter?
In Tromsø, the average temperature is -4 degrees, with somewhat colder temperatures at Skittenelv/Æra.

What clothes do we need to pack?
At Æra, we have a wide range of temperatures throughout the seasons, and we always recommend bringing clothes according to the conditions for the time of year you are visiting us. Warm clothes are always recommended for autumn and winter. For example: Woolen underwear, woolen socks, warm winter shoes, hat and mittens, scarf or turtleneck, warm winter jacket and trousers. Wool is the best thing to dress in. Layered on top of each other.

Can we drive a car in winter without experience of winter driving?
It is not necessary to have special training in driving on winter roads, but you should be extra careful if you drive in winter, especially in bad weather. All our rental cars are equipped with winter tires.

When is the best time to see the Northern Lights?
In our opinion from November to January this is the time where its most clear weather and best chances to see the northern lights. If the weather is clear, there are very good conditions for seeing the northern lights here. There is not much light pollution, which means that there are high chances of seeing strong northern lights.

How far from the sea is the cabins?
It varies a little for the different categories, our Panorama glass lodges are the closest by 50 meters, then Aurora Glass cabin superior, Aurora glass cabins and our 1 and 2-room cabins are furthest from the sea. None of the cabins are further than 150 meters from the sea.

What are the facilities at the cabins?
All cabins are equipped with their own kitchenette, toilet and shower. The largest cabins also have a living room.

Is there a gift shop on site?
Yes, We have a small shop in reception where we sell a small selection of food and necessities.

Do we have to bring our own warm clothes?
All guests must bring clothing suitable for the conditions. Warm clothes are always recommended for autumn and winter. Are the chances of seeing the northern lights good in your area?
There are no activity offers for Northern Lights tourism in the city center of Tromsø. A typical Northern Lights tour means that you have to sit on a bus for anywhere from two to eight hours in the Northern Lights. For dog sledding, scooter driving and whale watching one to three hours. As a guest with us, you can see the Northern Lights while eating your evening meal in your own cabin.

Where do the northern lights companies drive in the hunt for the northern lights?
Many drive past our location, since this area is known for high northern lights activity. So when you are at our lodge you will have high chances to go northern lights hunting first hand, especially since you will have your own rental car available.

Can you cook in the cabins?
Yes, all cabins are equipped with hobs, kettles, some kitchen utensils and fridges. We recommend that you buy what you will need before you drive out to Æra, as we have a very limited selection at reception. On the way Æra there are three grocery stores, Rema100 Tomasjord - Spar have a fresh food counter with fresh fish and meat. If you go closer to the camp you have Coop Extra at Kroken.

How do I get from Tromsø airport or the city center to Skittenelv/Æra?
In winterseason you get a rental car included in the stay when you book directly on our website. (15.09..2024-15.04.2025).This ensures you great flexibility. You can also use public transport (bus) or taxi to us.

Are there curtains on the windows?
Yes we do have pull up rollerblinds on the side around the bed for that extra little bit privacy in case someone feels uncomfortable :). But there are no curtains on the rooftop windows, means there will be light from the sun or moon if it's fullmoon and we recommend to bring your sleeping masks with you if you are light sensitive. During summer months we provide sleeping masks for our guests (from May to August)

What are the most popular activities offered by ÆRA?
Our most popular activity is where you catch your own king Crab dinner. Join us for a feast where we catch our own tasty fresh meal directly from the dock. We will pull up king crab pods directly from the pier and tell stories of how the king crab came to Norway. Our hosts will cook the king crab directly in front of you and serve the fresh crab legs in a traditional way alongside bread, butter, lemons and mayonnaise. Coffee, tea, and water is included during the dinner.

Are there good hiking trails or tracks around ÆRA?
There Are many nice walking tracks in the area, in winter you can use your snowshoes to walk up the valley and have a look at the beautiful scenery from the top of the hill.
